Sponsorship was a challenge for me. I went to a lot of business places and they were asking me why a mature person like me wants to compete at my age. I was turned down a lot.” It was the Barbados Public Workers Cooperative Credit Union Ltd. (BPWCCUL) which finally said yes. “I was very happy when they agreed to help me. I live by the sayingperseverance seldom failsso I was not going to give up”.

BPWCCUL in our mandate to assist all members to achieve their goals reviews all letters of request for sponsorship from members. Based on certain criteria such as a members’ good standing with the organisation, we will do our best to help make their dreams a reality. June’s wish to perform at the pinnacle of her sport was one such request, which we gladly supported and celebrate now with her and her family. Congratulations June!

Sports and athleticism are nothing new to Ms. Benjamin, this former Teacher, Welfare Officer, Medical Social Worker and Senior Executive Officer is in constant preparation for competing.

She recently visited the BPWCCUL Thrift Club’s Annual Summer Camp and spoke to the campers about her successes, giving some advice about exercise and its benefits “I exercise every day,” she revealed. “I have seen several health benefits; my blood pressure has moved from 154/95 to 110/70, my cholesterol is down from 6.5 to 3.5 and my weight has dropped from 175 pounds to 138. I walk and go to the beach every morning as part of my training. Keeping active and keeping fit is good for everybody and I recommend it. It is really good,” she said.
