The Barbados Jazz Society is back in the swing of things!

Old and new members of the Society came out in numbers for an organizational meeting on May 19, 2011 to explore opportunities for a “new” club, now revitalized through the efforts of a few Jazz lovers. Those present heard about the rich history of the Club, first formed in the early 1980’s; jazz concerts in partnership with the USIS, Friday afternoon jazz on the Harbour Master at the dock, various regular Jazz programs on the radio, Jazz events at venues all around the island and many other memorable events under the various enthusiastic Presidents Tom Hinds, Sue Yellin, Teddy Cummins and Nigel Jones.

Chaired by Dr. Jerome Jones, about two dozen attendees joined the Club and elected a new Executive Committee:

  • President: Ann Smith
  • Vice President: Barry Taylor
  • Treasurer: Sherry Cumberbatch
  • Secretary: Cheryl Holder
  • Public Relations: Penelope Hynam
  • Directors: Anderson Edghill, Philip Best and Dolly Straughan

Plans for an exciting new venue for meetings were initiated (to be announced later), ideas were discussed for new jazz programs on the radio, for outreach to all Barbados jazz lovers through the social networks and for, most importantly, regular jazz Events featuring both local and overseas jazz musicians.
