FIRST CITIZENS-WIPA 8th ANNUAL CRICKET AWARDS ON SUNDAY 5th JUNE 2011

Awards show to be broadcast live for fans across the Caribbean

Using the theme “Recognition, Rewards and Respect”, the West Indies Players Association (WIPA) will hold the 8th Annual First Citizens-WIPA Cricket Awards this Sunday (June 5, 2011) at the Queen’s Hall in Port of Spain, Trinidad. The annual awards function, which highlights the achievements and outstanding performances by senior West Indies male and female players, as well as the U-19 stars of the future, will be broadcast live on CNMG in Trinidad and Tobago and Sportsmax across the region from 05:30 to 07:00 pm TT time.

The First Citizens-WIPA Awards are a celebration of excellence and exemplary skill, dedication and leadership in West Indies Cricket.

President and CEO of WIPA, Dinanath Ramnarine, explained the intent and focus of this year’s ceremony. He said, “Recognition, respect and rewards are the three pillars of both WIPA and West Indies cricket. Cricket is perhaps the costliest and most demanding of games. Excelling in cricket requires discipline, diligence and the mastery of several different skills. We need to recognise how tough a sport cricket is and to reward and respect those who aspire to excellence in cricket.”

Mr. Ramnarine added, “Excellence is a moving target and is especially difficult to attain and sustain in cricket. However, since 2004 our Association has sought to provide regional recognition for those who have achieved leadership in the sport. What we know is that the top performers find the acclaim of their peers and the respect that they get the best reward of all.”

The nominees for the First Citizens-WIPA Awards will be in attendance at the award show, and fans will be able to watch the proceedings live throughout the Caribbean.

“The involvement of the fans is very important to the West Indies Players’ Association and to our game,” said Mr Ramnarine, “Cricket is the unifying force throughout the region. The fans are the major stakeholders in the sport and we take very seriously what they are saying.”

The First Citizens-WIPA Cricket Awards are a celebration of the spirit of West Indies cricket and our achievements over the past year. WIPA promises an entertaining and rewarding evening for the winners and for those watching the live telecast throughout the West Indies.
