He won the award for Cricketer of the Year for 2010. Mr Gayle who on this night was being honoured as the best in the West Indies, had also taken home earlier this year, the Man of The Series, Tournament and Golden Player Award of this Season of IPL. At the time he won the WIPA award, Chris Gayle was being hailed as one of the best players in the world, but was not selected to play for the regional team by the West Indies Cricket Board for the current series against India. His non-selection sparked a lot of controversy with West Indies fans, and with cricket followers around the world. In this context, Barry Wilkinson, the host of the WIPA Awards, asked Mr. Gayle about how much it would mean to him to be able to play for the West Indies.
