"Mia Mottley has become the voice of wisdom; reason and principle, within the BLP and within local, regional and international politics."

With way too many Barbadians now under pressure; finding it difficult to cope and ‘keep body and soul together,’ if you are a Barbados Labour Party supporter or simply someone who loves this country and want it to succeed – then you will agree and would have also realised, that: ‘the Month of March,’ was a remarkable one and that it ushered in a extraordinary and refreshing series of events. The entire country can be proud, especially recognising that despite the confusion; threats; setbacks, and disappointments – there is hope for the BLP and Barbados, hence it is now understandable why Barbadians and people within the region, are beginning to feel confident that a brighter future, is just around the corner.

Let us start with that simply delightful; mature; responsible; stately and breathtaking performance during the Appropriation Bill. Who would have thought that more was in store? But there always is. She answered a call for her to address the St. Philip North Branch and it was not surprising that close to 500 packed the massive Hall at the Hilda Skeene Primary School, to see and hear her. What was remarkable about that overwhelming and justified crowd response – is the fact that five other Branch Meetings were held that very evening. The Labour Party base saw hope and the assurance that the future is secured.

Then there was what the regional media are describing as: a well reasoned; compassionate and visionary, speech on HIV/AIDs, in Trinidad. It is perhaps the first time in history that ‘somebody’ gave a speech on HIV/AIDS and received a standing ovation. But the world applauded because they saw Mia’s humanity and her compassion.

Back in Barbados, the Government convinced itself that the way to solve grid-lock and traffic congestion, was to have cut down two 300 year-old trees at Warrens Bottom. The crowd called for Mia Mottley and she responded. Barbadians saw Mia the Environmentalist.

The month of March also demonstrated to the world that there is a massive divide between diplomacy and being a Moderator on a call-in-programme. At a time when there was a war of words between Barbados and Jamaica, Mia Mottley intervened and asked that the noise be lowered; the pressure reduced and that the issue be dealt with in a way that is satisfactory to both sides. Barbadians saw Mia the Diplomat and the peacemaker.

Then on March 31st 2011 she appeared on 94.7 FM with Tisha Hinds and by the time she had finished sharing her ‘moods and music’ with the people of Barbados and the region, it was obvious that there is such a clamour for and an acceptance of her – that Facebook was buzzing and scores of people requested that she be invited back. The region saw ‘a leader who is just Mia’ but a person who understands the importance of food, music and culture and the need to keep body and soul together.

Former Opposition Leader, Mia Mottley, leaves the Island this weekend and heads to Washington, DC where she and Trinidad and Tobago’s first female Prime Minister – The Honourable Kamla Persad-Bissessar, will have the distinguished honour of being presenters at the First Hemispheric Forum on Women’s Leadership for a Citizens’ Democracy.

Mia Mottley has become the voice of wisdom; reason and principle, within the BLP and within local, regional and international politics. This delightful reality and work of art, is something to celebrate and is the kind of progressive public involvement that makes you proud to be a Barbadian. There is hope!
