Spinners Davendra Bishoo and Veerasammy Permaul continued to bamboozle batsmen to put Guyana in control against Barbados in the WICB Regional first-class championship over the weekend.
Bishoo snared three wickets for 15 runs from seven overs, and Permaul grabbed two for 24 from 10 overs, as Barbados, replying to Guyana’s first innings total of 330, reached 88 for five at the close on the second day of their fourth round match at the Guyana National Stadium.
Teenaged opener Kraigg Brathwaite has held firm for the Barbadians with 30 not out, Dale Richards got 26 in an opening stand of 50 with him, and Kyle Hope made 20.
This followed easily Guyana’s best batting effort for the season. Their captain Assad Fudadin finished with the top score of 84, Vishaul Singh scored 66, Derwin Christian added 27, and Christopher Barnwell 24.
Left-arm fast-medium bowler Pedro Collins was the most successful Barbados bowler with four for 76 from 21.1 overs, left-arm spinner Ryan Hinds captured two for 40 from 17 overs, and Fidel Edwards took two for 57 from 24 overs.
Barbados then made a confident start, with Richards typically free scoring, and Brathwaite doggedly defying the Guyanese attack.
But Bishoo and Permaul, who almost bowled the Guyanese to a come-from-behind victory against Windward Islands in St. Vincent in the previous round of matches, got up to their old tricks again, and left the Barbadian batsmen in a daze.
Richards was lbw to Permaul essaying a sweep, and the drama started to unfold in the Barbadian innings, as they subsided to 84 for five.
Bishoo had Hope caught in the deep, and night-watchman Jason Holder was caught close to the wicket off the same bowler to leave Barbados 74 for three.
Barbados captain Ryan Hinds has been in the pink of form this season, but Permaul bowled him for four, and Bishoo had Kevin Stoute caught at slip for a duck to leave the Barbadians in a tailspin.
Earlier, Guyana continued from their overnight total of 176 for three, and lost Fudadin early, when Stoute had him caught at third slip. He batted 317 minutes, faced 229 balls, and struck five fours and two sixes.
Singh played the second fiddle to Christopher Barnwell batted through the remainder of the morning to carry the Guyanese to 241 for five at lunch.
But Barnwell was caught at slip for 24 off Hinds, bowling his left-arm spin, just after the interval, following a stand of 51 with Singh.
The diminutive Singh passed his previous highest score of 34 made on this ground against Barbados on his debut two years ago with a single off Stoute, and fortune favoured Derwin Christian, when Hinds dropped him at gully on eight in the same over.
Singh proceeded to reach his 50 from 144 balls, and celebrated with two fours off Collins before whipping Hinds through mid-wicket for another boundary.
Barbados struck twice in the last two overs before tea however, when Christian was caught at slip off Hinds and Singh was lbw to Collins on the stroke of the break to leave Guyana 328 for eight.
In the second over after tea, Permaul was trapped lbw to Edwards for a duck before Collins bowled Bishoo to end the innings.
