Montserrat’s Soufriere Hills Volcano “15 Years On” conference this April
The Soufriere Hills Volcano 15 Years On, scientific conference being organized by the Montserrat Volcano Observatory is just two months away.
According to Conference chairman and Director of the MVO Dr. Paul Cole, they have met their conference attendance targets and are confident that the event will do much to share the vast amount of knowledge that’s been gained from studying Soufriere Hills Volcano over the past 15 years.
The volcano rumbled back to life in 1995 and since then has created many challenges for Montserrat but also opportunities to improve the knowledge of this natural phenomenon for scientists across the globe.
“Soufriere Hills Volcano – 15 Years On,” which will be held April 4-8, 2011 at the Montserrat Cultural Centre, will bring together volcanologists, scientists and students of the science from regional and international institutions.
The five-day conference will feature keynote presentations in such areas as Monitoring and Techniques; Hazard Assessment; Risk, Perception and Outreach; Modelling and Geochemistry. Other activities include field trips to view recent deposits if hazard level permits, a round-the-island boat tour, a hike through the Centre Hills, poster presentations, and evening entertainment.
