Apes Hill Chukkas, 9 January – Pretoria Vs. Whitehall: Part 2

You may recall when first I visited Waterhall (As Apes Hill used to be called, why the name change?) I said I found it rather sugar-plantation like as the few black or mixed Barbadians were dresed as Virgin Stewardesses serving scones to expat Brits here to view some Chukkas, and here it is near two years later and guess what? There are still not so many Bajans of all hues present, but at least they can be patrons now as well as part of the Staff... Well done!

The first bout of chukkas on 9th January was very keenly contested, with Wayne Archer being the ace in Pretoria’s sleeve – the match was 5 to 4.5; for those new to Polo? When one team has a higher Handicap than the other then the lesser team is given a points boost to try and even the score – in this case, it didn’t work… Pretoria had better players and beat Whitehall, it doesn’t always happen but it can.

Unlike Golf, the higher your Handicap in Polo the better with 10 as the Ultimate – it is said only Argentina has two 10’s and two 9’s as globally-qualified competitors; everywhere else? Most folks are glad to have a 0 or 1 as qualifying them to compete in the sport!
