The Intrinsic Tales of Growing Up Caribbean: At a Cinema near you by 2012
Growing Up Caribbean is a series of fourteen (14) compelling dramas, written by the crème de la crème of Caribbean writer/directors. These intriguing dramas are based on childhood experiences growing up in the region. The dramas will be filmed in 2011 /2012 in Barbados, Antigua, Dominica, Guadeloupe, Guyana, Haiti, Jamaica, Martinique, St Lucia and Trinidad and will depict the vibrant and eclectic cultures of these countries.
Co-producers Penelope Hynam and Beatrice Hallenbarter are the innovators behind the project.
With more than 46 years of experience in film and television production between them, they bring a wealth of experience to the regional craft of film making. Penelope is a Barbadian trained in film and television production in Canada and the U.S. and the award winning producer and creator of the docu-drama “George Washington in Barbados”.
She commented that the Growing Up Caribbean series “will contribute to the knowledge and global understanding of different cultures and teach us compassion and tolerance of cultures other than our own”. Beatrice has been the Line Producer/Production Manager for many feature films in Europe as well as for German Television in Barbados and currently develops products for filming in the Caribbean. She anticipates Growing Up Caribbean will “celebrate and reveal what it means to grow up in the Caribbean and to share with the region and the rest of the world the vibrancy, beauty, complexity and sense of humour that links these islands.”
The funding for the Development/Pre-production stage has been provided by the European Union and Caribbean Export Development Agency and private sponsors. Further funding is being sought for the production, post-production, marketing and distribution from regional and international agencies. The project is expected to be ready for circulation by spring 2012.
The project has sparked much interest globally by the producers’ presentations at the 2010 Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF), the 2010 Berlin Film Festival, the Trinidad and Tobago Film Festival and by being invited to participate in the Market Development Program hosted by Caribbean Tales Worldwide Distribution’s (CTWD) in Toronto in September 2010.
The project Growing Up Caribbean is a labour of love for the producers, writers and directors. Each of the fourteen (14) half-hour dramas are thought – provoking stories set in the diverse tropical surroundings of the Caribbean. Penelope stated “Our target audience is of course, the people in the countries of the Caribbean and moving out from there to the millions of Caribbean people in the Diaspora across Canada and the US, Europe and Asia, who almost never see themselves and their stories on their screens……an audience hungry for this – and of course anyone who has ever been a child!”
