HENDERSON BOVELL – SOCIAL COMMENTATOR

I speak for no one or no Group — that is how I started. Those who know me well can tell you that I have always had a view of everything and that over the years, I have communicated such whether in letters to the editor or on the call-in-programme. Not everyone can write well and communicate effectively. I therefore thank God for the gifts he has given me.

As our country celebrates 44 years of Independence – I believe that when the Parliamentary Representative for St. Michael North East takes a moment and reflects on the events of the past two and a half years and the month of October in particular – no doubt she will be grateful and thanks God for people like you.

It would not have escaped her attention that everything she was able to accomplish in the past 2 1/2 years (on the political side) was possible with your support and commitment and because you were willing to put your shoulder to the plough; roll up your sleeves and spread the message of hope in the interest of Barbados.

I must admit that a lot has changed since I was invited to be a member of her Team in March 2008 but I take comfort in the fact that every time our country faced a setback, Barbadians remained committed to seeing our country succeed and are even now prepared to fight another day. That is the Barbadians way: sacrifice for the greater good, endurance and hope for better. These are the principle which bind us as a people.

Our country is in trouble but I believe that if we are to take the next life-changing leap forward as a nation, we must individually and collectively address the one thing which still yokes us to the worst aspects of our history – that is lack of self confidence. I accept that if we can marry self-assurance to thrift, and industry and root them in Jesus’ principles of humility, compassion, forgiveness and acceptance of diversity, our horizons will be limitless.

The only boundaries we will encounter are those we set for ourselves. I therefore hope that our Government gets it right because if it does not – Barbadians will suffer.

Today, no matter our views or background, we have the duty to help set our nation’s course. Barbados’ development and greatness will always depend on its citizens (home and abroad) recognizing that fact and fulfilling the duty that comes with it.

As patriotic sons and daughters, we must therefore take the challenges and opportunities that face this nation as our own. As long as some of us still struggle, how can we as a people be fully content?

As we reflect on our independence and the sacrifice made in the national interest and as we celebrate the profound pride of being a Barbadian, let us salute those who have been honored for outstanding service to Barbados. Despite the message of gloom and doom, let us join the movement and aspire toward all we can and must become as a people and a nation.

It has been announced recently that Barbados has attained developed country status. I am therefore thankful for those in past generations whose heroic efforts brought this great goal within reach for our times.

Happy Independence and may God continue to bless you, your family our Government and Barbados.
