Geothermal Energy on Nevis: A Caribbean Success Story, US Geologists fascinated

A scientific paper titled “Geothermal Drilling on Nevis: A Caribbean Success Story”, highlighting the work done by West Indies Power (WIP) to identify and characterize the geothermal resource on Nevis, was selected for presentation and delivered at the Geothermal Resources Council (GRC) Annual Meeting held in Sacramento, California on October 24-27, 2010.

The PowerPoint presentation by West Indies Power, Chief Geologist Joe LaFleur, was well attended and well received. Mr. LaFleur is the person in charge of the work that discovered the large geothermal resource that exists on Nevis.

The authors of the paper are Joseph LaFleur and Dr. Roland Hoag, Executive Vice President for BEAD, LLC. The document will be published in The Transactions of the Geothermal Resources Council and will later be available in digital form through the GRC website:

The GRC is the primary science and industry trade organization in the global geothermal community. The current high level of interest in geothermal development was demonstrated by the approximate 1,500 participants who attended this year’s annual meeting.

West Indies Power Holdings is now in the process of developing geothermal power plants to supply low cost renewable power to Nevis and St Kitts. In the future it plans to export the low cost renewable geothermal power to other Caribbean islands via submarine electrical transmission cables.

West Indies Power is an independent power producer specializing in the development of geothermal energy in the Caribbean. It began its geothermal development drilling program on Nevis in January 2008.
