Barbadian Wins Global Rum Ambassador of the Year – Chesterfield Browne toasts London victory

International brand ambassador and mixologist at Mount Gay Distilleries Limited, Chesterfield Browne defeated three other finalists from across the globe to win the novel ‘Global Rum Ambassador of the Year Award.’ at the inaugural Golden Rum Barrel Awards held at the UK RumFest Rum Experience in London, England on Saturday, October 16, 2010.

Browne’s win is significant not only for Mount Gay Distilleries Limited but also for Barbados and our tourism product. The triumph also highlights world wide popularity, recognition and preferred taste of Mount Gay Rum, the rum that invented rum.

An excited Chesterfield Browne described his win as “one of his greatest achievements” as he outclassed the other contenders Andreas Redlefsen of Elements 8 Rum, Bacardi Rum’s David Cordoba and Jim Wrigley of Santa Teresa Rum:

Chesterfield Browne, International Brand Ambassador & Mixologist for Mount Gay rums

The Global Rum Ambassador of the Year Award recognises ambassadors who tirelessly promote their brand, while training, inspiring and educating the trade industry, as well as discerning consumers. To be adjudged as the best rum ambassador in the world at the first ever awards is a huge honour. I work hard at my job because it is something I thoroughly enjoy. I believe in the premium quality of Mount Gay Rums and as such, I enjoy sharing the ‘rum that invented rum’ with thousands of potential visitors to Barbados that I meet across the globe. I wish to thank everyone who voted for me as this recent award is not just for me but for all Barbadians.”

The Global Rum Ambassador of the Year Award is not Browne’s first international recognition as he has also received several other accolades including being voted Best Mixologist at A Taste of the Caribbean in Montreal, Canada in 2007.

Locally, Browne has won the Minister of Tourism’s Award for Bartender of the Year not once, but twice.

Raphaël Grisoni, Managing Director of Mount Gay Distilleries Ltd. is delighted at Browne’s achievement: “Chesterfield continues to be an asset to both Mount Gay Distilleries Limited and Barbados, bringing global recognition to his company and country with his skills, professionalism and magnetic personality… As the first ‘Global Rum Ambassador’ in the world, Chesterfield has the perfect opportunity to set the stage for further excellence as he demonstrates that Barbados is both the home of premium rums and world class workers.

Browne joined the Mount Gay family as a bartender in 1994 after having amassed six years of experience in the hospitality industry, principally as a bartender. He quickly became one of the main attractions at the Mount Gay Rum Visitors Centre because of his dynamic style and flair which was exhibited in his tasting sessions.

Further, Browne created his own rum punch which became known as the best tasting rum punch on the island, which was bottled and labelled as “Chester’s Own”, after numerous requests from guests to take the punch back to their respective homes.

At Mount Gay Distilleries Limited Browne moved through the ranks as head bartender, then on to International Brand Spokesperson and in his current capacity as International brand ambassador and mixologist he now travels around the world promoting the world’s oldest and finest rum, Mount Gay Rum.
