Confidant 003

You’d recall we carried a couple of flyers concerning a movie and seminar at the Olympus Theatres (no longer owned by Phil Hardena check on Facebook suggests it’s now under CEO John Morgan), and therefore it’s only natural to want to know WHO is the next Barbados actor or actress to go to Hollywood? How was the movie? How was the After Party? What were the stars like?

Okay… Let’s get these queries over with, but not necessarily in the order posed… “The Confidant” is a poorly named flick which while a good concept, open to moral and philosophical debate was botched in its fruition to “silver screen,” and I may consider it as a 6 but that’s me being kind – Internet Movie Data Base offers out of a possible 10? They give a 3 with a fluctuating decimal point, while another review of movies direct to DVD was even less kinder than IMDb or myself and found more holes in the plot than a barrel of Swiss Cheese shot open by a Gatling gun!

I should have known there’d be trouble if when I first received the flyers, that Olympus itself knew nothing of the movie or seminar, on two separate days in two different tries I was unable to procure tickets for both the Actors’ Workshop and the VIP/After Party. Even when the Olympus’ new Marketing Manager claimed he’d appear with my ticket? No such luck, sent my wife as she was already heading for Sheraton, but she waited 45 minutes in vain and in the end I got the VIP/AP alone on the Thursday before the Opening Night of Saturday 18 – this conflicted with Ad Lib who dropped an impromptu session in for its fans and the Plantation’s National Karaoke Contest…

After what I ended up going through, I was sorry I hadn’t skipped paying for the ticket and try pulling a double-header of Ad Lib & Karaoke – what a farce I put up with! I felt for contestants who spent hard earned money waiting to learn who was the Winner for the Hollywood contest, read their Rules carefully – they worded it in such a way they didn’t bind themselves to pick a local victor for the competition. Why all the confusion?

{HYPOTHETICALFair Comment/IMHO} A cheap way to get a Barbados holiday?Hi, I’m filming a romantic comedy in Barbados...” “Magnificent, you can stay at {insert resort here} as complimentary once you mention it in your credits…” (“Producers” ‘creditResort in a flyer sent abroad and skip making picture, etc.) Anyone recall Mel Brooks classic picture where a film was designed to FAIL as a tax break?

Wondered if people came to see Hollywood actors or came to be seen seeking such?

Drinks before and after the movie were free at VIP but you have to PAY for them at Expo, why not the other way around, but considering you PAID for VIP – why are you paying at all? Only booze, no snacks – no samosas, no mini-pizzas, no Chex Mix, no Corn Curls… Nothing except liquor! Maybe they hoped everyone is too hungover to recall what an awful time was had?

Malcolm Jamal Warner was in Barbados once again, but he says no pictures please to me directly, I ask for an interview and he says he’s only a guest and nothing to do with either “Confidant” or “Pudding” – yet in Facebook ex-Theo poses with Olympus’ Marketing Manager’s mother? Am I too pale?

The deejay plays LOUD techno and thus destroys the recording I had of an interview with Regina King. From memory, I learned she wants to do an action picture to show off her fitness and she’s currently doing a cop show called Southland on TNT in America, and she just finished voicing Huey and Riley for Boondocks‘ third season – she has no problem jumping from Huey’s private revolutionary aphorisms to Riley’s maniacal thuggery, since she voices both characters (many USA cartoons use females as boys since real children as they get older, their voice canbreak so thus another example is Nancy Cartwright who does the voice of Bart Simpson, true-true-true!)…

Honestly, I can understand Regina not wanting to go outside as she feels she may get swamped by fans, so why didn’t Urban Eye organise one of the other cinetheques in Expo to be a soundbooth where quiet chats can be held with a chaperone to maintain safety for the actors? Then I learn she too is nothing to do with “Pudding,” so why are they here?

So who is the Barbados talent to go for Hollywood? Your guess is as good as mine, I understand there were 33 contestants… Among them Simon Alleyne and Sean Field! I kept asking on the night who won and eventually they announced that 4 more auditions have to be reviewed but since Kenya Moore’s grandfather passed away the process is delayed to the following week – yet I see no updates on any FB pages concerning this fiasco!

I am sorry Kenya endured a death in her family, but with all due respect – do they not say in Hollywood the show must go on? The auditions were videos uploaded to a website, which means they can be reviewed anywhere in the world? Even if Kenya Moore has no wish to adjudicate then DELEGATE and just be present to eventually announce the winner!

Olympus Cineplex at 1:17 am, all you needed was tumbleweed - the After Party was supposed to go on to 3:00 am?

Well, if this After party was a tyre you could hear the air leaking rapidly at this point, and sure enough at 1:00 am both Regina and Warner were leaving with the other overseas actors in a stretch limo which narrowly avoided colliding with two vehicles as it exited Sheraton swiftly for Colony Club. By 1:10 am, the After Party, which was to have run to 3:00 am? It was deader than Bill Compton or Eric Northman!

Do you recall how Freddy Fender sang a tune “Wasted days and wasted nights“? It seems highly appropriate here!

Her name’s Nancy CARTWRIGHT (but she does do Bart, as well as Nelson Muntz, Ralph Wiggum and either Rod or Todd Flanders); castmate Yeardley Smith did audition for Bart but she ended up voicing Lisa because her voice was (and is) just too high to be plausible for a boy, and in fact Lisa Simpson is the only character she voices on the show.
