This exhibition is in celebration of the 80th birthday of Barbados’ unofficial Poet Laureate Kamau Brathwaite. It is part of the Heritage month celebrations of the National Cultural Foundation and the National Art Gallery Committee. The exhibition is a group show with work by some of Barbados’ leading artists. The Curator is Janice Whittle.

The Artists were invited to produce a work of Art which should reflect an understanding of the themes and approach to writing that is evidenced in Kamau Brathwaite’s work. They have each produced something extraordinary to communicate to the viewer how the work and life of Kamau Brathwaite speaks to them.

On Sunday May 23rd at 4.30pm, there will be a ‘Meet the Artist‘ session, so that the Artists and their audience may engage in a dialogue about the work.

There will be a Literary Arts Read-In on May 30th at 4:30 pm as part on the continuing 80th Birthday celebrations. This will showcase some of our leading writers and performers reading excerpts from Kamau’s work and the audience is invited to bring their favourite Kamau piece and read it. The exhibition runs through June 26th.

The Queen’s Park Gallery is located in Queen’s Park, Bridgetown, Barbados. Gallery hours are Monday to Saturday 10am – 6pm.
