Windies ready for opening World Cup match – Team includes tall Barbadian 1st Class player
cricketers are confident as they look forwards to the start of the ICC Under-19 World Cup in New Zealand. The Windies have their first match on Friday against Pakistan (Thursday 5:30 pm Eastern Caribbean Time/4:30 pm Jamaica Time). The match will be played at Fitzherbert Park, at Palmerston North near to the city of Napier.
Coach Andre Coley spoke boldly and said they are focussed on winning the tournament.
“To do so we know we have to take it step by step, match by match, day by day,” he said. “We are playing against Pakistan to win and we will be playing all our matches to win. So far, we’ve looked good and we are confident going into the match. A winning start would be ideal. The key is the way we execute. We have our tactics in place and we will look to play to our strengths.”
The coach said all players were full fit and available for selection. The main batsmen are opener Kraigg Brathwaite and skipper Andre Creary; while allrounders Yannic Cariah and Jason Holder are expected to feature. Coach Coley said that with several quality allrounders in the side, it allows flexibility in the batting order.
The West Indies have been drawn in Group D. The other first round matches are: vs Bangladesh (Sunday, January 17), and Papua New Guinea (Tuesday, January 19) at Fitzherbert Park. The two top teams will move on to the Cup phase and the bottom two will play in the Plate.
Holder, the imposing six-footer who has represented Barbados at the first-class level, said all the players are excited to get onto the field and go to work.
“I’m very confident we can go on and qualify. We have the right balance in the side. Once the guys are confident on the day, and if we play good cricket, and stick to the basics, I think we could go through. The competition hasn’t started yet and anything can happen,” he said.
