?The characters feel real and,
best of all, they feel Caribbean,
but the story could have held up in any culture.?
?...a story of the triumph of spirit over situation.?
?...well crafted, lively, and absolutely believable.?
–The Daily Observer
?Beautifully written, The Boy from Willow Bend is a poignant and insightful coming of age story in which every child will be able to see him/herself.?
Antiguan author Joanne C. Hillhouse and Hansib Publications have teamed up for the re-issue of her first book, The Boy from Willow Bend. The book, which recently received the distinction of being added to the schools? reading list for Antigua and Barbuda, returns with a new cover designed by celebrated Antiguan artist, Heather Doram. This second edition means that The Boy from Willow Bend, originally published in 2002, will once again be widely available.
The Boy from Willow Bend is an engaging tale which speaks especially to young readers, while sparking nostalgia in older Caribbean readers. ?I enjoyed going down memory lane with these characters,? a reviewer wrote in Antigua?s Daily Observer. Yet, thanks to the universality of its themes of growing up, letting go, and finding one?s way in the world, it is, as another reviewer wrote in the Trinidad Guardian, a ?story (that) could have held up in any culture.?
The book may, therefore, hold appeal for students, visitors to St John’s, books clubs, and others. She hopes you?ll check it out, and, of course, assist in spreading the word.
