Two radio commercials produced by Crucial Productions Inc. have been recognized at the U.S. Virgin Island’s division of the 2009 National ADDY Awards – one of the industry’s largest and most prestigious competitions. The radio spots, both commissioned by MLB Creative in St. Thomas for client McDonald’s, have altogether garnered a “Best of Radio” , a Gold ADDY for :30 Radio, and a Silver ADDY for Sound Design.
The 30-second “Chicken Snack Wrap Rap” promo was the winner of “Best of Radio” and a Gold ADDY. “Skillet Burrito“, also a 30-second spot, won the Silver ADDY for Sound Design – a niche category specifically created to recognize the creative execution of individual components of an advertising entry.
Graham Johnson, who joined the Crucial Productions team as audio production engineer in February of 2008, worked on the Silver winning ADDY spot after only two months of training in the studio environment by Phil Archer, a testament to his twenty years experience in the live sound arena, mixing and engineering for a multitude of local and international acts.
Crucial Productions has produced numerous radio advertisements for MLB Creative over the years, forming a relationship that, according to MLB’s CEO and Partner Terri Brown, is based on their mutual understanding of the components that create a successful radio campaign. ?A well written script is only half the battle,? said Brown. ?Having a creative engineer and producer can make all the difference between a good radio spot and a great spot. Phil Archer makes that difference for us.?
According to Phil Archer, owner and founder of Crucial Productions, the creative process is at its best when both parties are given the latitude to express their creativity. ?MLB gave us a rap and let us run with the music and talent selection. We had a lot of fun with it.?
This year’s accolades mark the second year in a row Archer and his team at Crucial have produced award-winning radio spots for MLB. In 2008, Crucial produced a 60-second radio commercial for MLB which one a Gold ADDY, a Judge’s Choice Award, and the heralded “Best in Show“, a category that is rarely won by a radio spot. The ADDY Awards are sponsored by the American Advertising Federation (AAF) and recognize creative excellence in numerous categories of various media types.
