SURINAMESE EMILIO LIMON INSPIRED BY DIGICEL KICK START CLINICS – Believes that U16 level creates more opportunities for players
Emilio Limon has become a household name, not only in his native Suriname, but across the Caribbean since taking part in the inaugural Digicel Kick Start Clinics. Limon was one of eight talented young footballers selected by John Barnes to spend one week training at Sunderland AFC in 2008, and since then, has seen his football career go from strength to strength.
Limon ? a gifted midfielder who plays with local club Robinhood in Suriname ? puts his success over the last twelve months down to the experience he gained during the Digicel Kick Start Clinics and at Sunderland AFC.
Shortly after returning from Sunderland, he was selected by the national team to play in Suriname?s World Cup Qualifiers against Guyana. His agility and sharp football mind was showcased in full flight, as he caused lots of problems for the Guyanese defense in both matches.
Following this exposure at national level, Limon was subsequently invited to play for FC Utrecht in Holland ? on a one month loan from his club in Suriname.
?The experience I gained from the Digicel Kick Start Clinics has enhanced my career and given me a lot of power and confidence to go forward in my career,? said Emilio. ?I learnt a lot from John Barnes and from the week I spent at Sunderland AFC and it has opened a lot of doors for me. My next goal is to win a contract for a major club in Europe next season.?
Sharing his views on this year?s Digicel Kick Start Clinics which are open to under 16 footballers, Emilio said, ?Holding the Clinics for under 16 footballers creates more chances for young footballers to enhance their game and play at a higher level. It gives them a good opportunity to showcase their talent and be in with a chance to train at Sunderland AFC.?
The Digicel Kick start Clinics are presently on a short break after completing the first three out of six Clinics in Jamaica, Barbados and Suriname. The final three countries of the Caribbean leg will be Haiti (June 10-11), Trinidad and Tobago (14-15) and St. Kitts & Nevis, June 18-19.
The names of the eight players who will be selected to go to AFC Sunderland will announced on June 21st in St. Kitts & Nevis.
