Damon Gerard Corrie, one of the most controversial young leaders in regional Indigenous Rights issues – is heading to the United Nations headquarters in New York City next week; to be an observer during the United Nations Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues.

Corrie, who was born in Barbados but is of Guyanese Lokono-Arawak descent made an impression at his first attendance at the UNPFII in 2008 when he took up the desperate plight of the Hmong Tribe of Laos and drafted a letter of solidarity for the Hmong Delegation – then personally circulated it among the Indigenous representatives from around the world gathered there – collecting signatures of support for the Hmong case to be raised in the General Assembly; much to the consternation of the Government of Laos.

He then exposed to the world – through his fiery media articles – the fact that the Government of Indonesia has sent 2 member of their Secret Police Branch to the 2008 UNPFII he was attending to intimidate the Alifaru Indigenous representative whom he had just befriended (she was forced to leave early for fear of her life) as she was revealing to the world (through Damon’s articles) the many and severe human rights atrocities that were being committed on the Alifaru people who are still living under an illegal military occupation by the Indonesian military.

He also found the time to solicit the assistance of President Roberto Borrero of the United Confederation of Taino Peoples to have a selection of woodcarvings made by his brother-in-law Foster Simon – a famous Arawak woodsculpting artist from Pakuri Arawak Territory in Guyana – be officially exhibited at the United Nations Headquarters; the first Arawak artist to have his work exhibited there.

Corrie, besides being the inheritor of the now ceremonial chieftaincy of the Eagle Clan Arawaks – is also the founder/President of the Pan-Tribal Confederacy of Indigenous Tribal Nations has vowed to continue to voluntarily use his pen to ‘Fight the good fight‘ on behalf of any Indigenous person or tribe that should come to him seeking his help.

  1. It’s about releasing the fear within…..and living the world vision that we all are here to do….as Damon is doing. I support my brother and ask his guidance and protection of our universal life force, of God, of Earth, of Spirit. May he succeed in loving peace against the evil within the hearts of sleeping souls….and may his energy awaken them to what is true, real, love. May the force always be on his side.
