BAM ? The First 24 Hour Barbados Art Marathon: 13 December to 14 December at Lancaster Great House Gallery
The Gallery at Lancaster Great House is holding the First 24 Hour Barbados Art Marathon – BAM – starting at noon on Saturday, December 13 and ending at noon on Sunday, December 14. During the 24 hour marathon, 60 artists including Alison Chapman-Andrews, Fielding Babb, Corrie Scott and Ras Akyem through to Barbados Community College and secondary school students will be creating work and the public is invited to visit Lancaster at any time during the 24 Art Marathon to check on the progress and the creation of the works and to talk to the artists on the creative process involved.
All work produced will be juried by Barbadian arts aficionados Jewel Forde of CBC, Allison Thompson of the Barbados Community College and Roger Chubb of Lancaster. The Gallery of BAM works will formally open again to the public at 3:00 p.m. on Sunday, December 14 and Lancaster is expecting a special guest to perform the Opening. All work on display is available for sale and the sale proceeds will benefit local charities. For those who wish to buy something unique and innovative as a Christmas present this will be a real opportunity. The exhibition, while being continuously rehung, will remain available for viewing until Sunday evening, January 4, 2009.
Roger Chubb, whose company Belvedere Consultants is one of the benefactors of the annual arts programme, says “…the idea of holding an art marathon is not new. It was suggested to me by Virginia Trieloff who is a consultant at Belvedere and who runs a summer arts programme and artists’ residency in Renews, Newfoundland. Each August there is a 24 hour art marathon held in St. John’s known as HAM which attracts around 100 participants – young and old, professional and amateur – working in disciplines from print making, mixed media, sculpture, performance art, pottery, wood working and of course, painting and drawing.
“Lancaster Great House belongs to Sir Martyn and Lady Arbib who kindly make the house and grounds available for art exhibitions and events to benefit local charities through the Barbados Community Foundation.”This is a “cannot miss” event.
