Dominica Luggage Woes – Dedicated to anyone that has EVER complained about their luggage being delayed when travelling on LIAT

My thanks to a vigilant reader who spotted this, hope no one has to experience this, I recall in 1992 when I was THIS close to losing my luggage – luckily American Airlines managed to save the day, BARELY! Phew…

Visitors to Dominica are up in arms about what appears to be a serious luggage problem currently being experienced.

Angry visitors flooded the Melville Hall Airport following their arrival on LIAT flights, upset about the fact that their luggage had been delayed in Antigua because of overweight issues.

But Country Manager of LIAT, Gerald Cools-Lartigue said the delay in luggage arrival could not be avoided.

We have seven flights daily and they are coming in full. We are having a serious problem with baggage but it cannot be avoided. There are a lot of people coming in. We will bring the bags that are delayed to the Canfield Airport to make it easier“.

According to him, the safety of passengers is also being taken into consideration.

We can barely carry one bag per passenger because of the weight restriction and following 9-11 we don’t want to risk any one’s life. The problem we are having is that most people coming from the US or UK and Canada are coming with three pieces of luggage,” he added.

Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit said arrangements are being made to rectify the problem.

  1. Hmmm….

I can relate to this all too well. About three months ago, I travelled to St. Lucia from St. Vincent on LIAT. I was in the 758 for only 4 days. My luggage was only with me for about 8 hours of that time. How does that happen when between destinations that 20 minutes apart?
