BVI’s Callaloo Poets attend ‘Virgin Islands Voices: A Literary and Spoken Word Festival’ in St. Thomas

The Callaloo Poets just concluded attending the ‘Virgin Islands Voices: A Literary and Spoken Word Festival‘ at the UVI Administration & Conference Center on the St. Thomas Campus. They were among the many participants which included UVI Students, private and public secondary school students and the general public.

The Literary and Spoken Word Festival was organized by the Virgin Islands Humanities Council, a private non-profit organization. This event not only showcased the various talents but offered workshops which can help to further the creative talents of people in the Virgin Islands. Some workshops were presented by noted regional poet Paul Keens-Douglas, along with Drs. Gilbert Spruave and Elaine Jacobs.

Local poets in attendance included Lavanta Thompson, Jason and Maria Callwood, Katherine Irish, April Glasgow, Jerome Joseph and Linette Rabsatt. Linette performed in the scheduled ‘Evening with VI Voices‘ along with Shawntay Henry, the 2008 winner of the Poetry Out Loud National Competition, the Poetic Collage Youth Society Royal Theater Boys and Girls Club of St. Petersburg, Florida, Eugene ‘Doc’ Petersen, Gail Hughes and many other talented performers.

The Callaloo Poets are continuing to seek opportunities to hone their talents and to promote their work.
