Another Bajan Weekend – Let’s head for Baxter’s Rd and get some fried TILAPIA? Ask Guyana!

If I caught a fish this big then I probably would also say to hell with Flying Fish… It also may reduce some of the annual friction we have with Tobago‘s coast guard? Anyway, it seems that Guyana has cut a deal with Barbados and sent us a different type of fish for us to fry – tilapia. We do get some here, but not in the quantities that are going to be sent here from Guyana, according to the Stabroek News

[National Aquaculture Association of Guyana (NAAG)] chairman Beni Sankar first exported farm-reared fish last August and a shipment of 1,200 pounds of tilapia was recently sent to Barbados. In my experience in exporting, fish is not too tough” Sankar said. Compared with rice, he said, “the small man could do the same, plus there are many processors willing to get involved.” Sankar also supplies leading supermarkets such as Nigel’s and Bonny’s with tilapia and pacu.
What Chairman Sankar has been doing is (pardon the use, but it is very accurate here) is to POOL the reources of small fish farmers into a whopper of a crop –
This business model, also known as satellite farming, allows smaller farmers to combine their production with a larger farm base to take advantage of markets that would have otherwise been closed to them.
