VIIA & Callaloo Poets donate to Family Support Network

On Saturday, October 20, 2007, the Virgin Islands Improvement Association (VIIA) and the Callaloo Poets spoke, sang, drummed and danced in an artistic protest to domestic violence. The performers were passionate and kept the audience focused on the message to ‘End Domestic Violence‘. The performers included Sowande, Lavanta (Artful), April, Justin, Linette, Shine-I, Tex, Washasha, Cup Man, Suzette, Joanna and many more. The viewers were also blessed by a dance by Kareem and Symore.

Representatives, Judith Charles and Carol Smith from the Family Support Network (FSN), also made presentations providing information on domestic violence. The attendees were also pinned with the traditional purple ribbon. VIIA and the Callaloo Poets were able to donate $111.00 to FSN that evening from book sales and donations.

Another highlight of the evening was the tributes made to the late artist, David Watts Pemberton. Many recognized his talents as a poet, singer and painter and three of his poems were read at the event.

The VIIA and Callaloo Poets would like to thank everyone for attending and for supporting this art forum. The next poetry reading is scheduled for November 17, 2007 in accordance with our schedule of readings every third Saturday of the month.
