Human rights lawyer arrested on domestic abuse charge in St Lucia

A prominent human rights lawyer in Castries has been released on EC $750 (US $277) bail after he appeared in court this week accused of assaulting his British-born wife.

Police confirmed that they had arrested and charged human rights lawyer Martinus Francois earlier this week after his wife placed an emergency call seeking their help and protection.

The British born wife, whose name had not been disclosed, had accused the attorney of assaulting her.

Among the conditions set for his bail is that Francois has to stay away from his wife.

Five years ago, Francois’ first wife had accused him of physically assaulting and imprisoning her at their home.

The New Zealand-born woman subsequently left the island.
