COSCAP Forum on Intellectual Property – local and international experts share their experiences

The Copyright Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers Incorporated (COSCAP) is pleased to inform you of the upcoming series of workshops, The COSCAP Forum on Intellectual Property.

Over the past few years COSCAP has hosted a number of workshops primarily aimed at its members, educating them on various aspects of copyright and the music industry. However, this year COSCAP has decided to extend its target audience to include a wider number of stakeholders, in recognition of the growing importance of intellectual property in various business models as a form of wealth and the economic diversification of the Barbadian economy. This is especially so for the cultural industries which the Government of Barbados has announced its intention to play a greater role in developing.

As such, over a four day period, 28 to 31 October 2007 we offer interested persons the opportunity to hear well-known local and international experts address the following topics:

1. The Recording Industry in the Digital Age & Digital Rights Management ? A detailed look at matters of interest including the changing nature of recording business with digital technology, digital rights management and international standards, breaking into the business online and new sources of revenue.

2. New Money: Investing in intangible assets ? the need for valuation of IP/intangibles ? use as security, taxation, mergers & acquisitions, the contribution of IP assets to overall value of firm ?role of IP in innovation, competitive positioning, generation of licensing revenue and the contribution of IP assets to overall value of firm ?role of IP in innovation, competitive positioning, generation of licensing revenue

3. Copyright Licensing, Broadcasters, Audio-visual & Multimedia Producers & Advertisers ? an overview of the main licensing terms and participants and the illustration of various licensing scenarios such as licensing for a movie, online use and advertising.

Our international speakers will include:

Kelvin King – He left working with the British Government after 17 years to establish a Valuation Unit for a large accountancy practice and, before the founding of Valuation Consulting, was the Managing Director of a specialist valuation company within a major international Swiss bank. He has undertaken corporate finance work most of his working life. Kelvin is frequently asked to lecture for professional bodies and training organisations about commercial and tax valuation and founded the Society of Share & Business Valuers in the UK.

Steve Gordon – Steve Gordon is an entertainment attorney and consultant based in New York City specialising in the production, distribution and financing of music, television, documentaries, feature films, and digital entertainment projects.

Lisa Zbitnewserved as President of SonyBMG and BMG Canada for over 10 years.

  • Ms. Colleen HueApart from being the producer of popular Barbadian film “Hit For Six,” she is the former head of the English company Video Performance Limited which is an affiliate company to the Phonographic Performance Limited (PPL), which negotiates and collects royalties from broadcasters and other users of music videos.

These workshops are intended to be very cutting edge introducing new concepts and perspectives to the Barbadian business community which in COSCAP’s view will be very beneficial.
