Barbados has own version of Annie Oakley doing dixie in Canada – local female sharpshooter hit a perfect score at close to 1/2 mile

It is not the first time that some form of the life of Annie Oakley has appeared in this News Blog, this time is bit closer to the real life character in the sense that this is sharpshooting in what many still consider a man’s arena.

The World Long Range Target Rifle Championships in Canada find the Bajans taking on apart from Canada, Australia, UK, USA, Channel Islands, Germany, Kenya, South Africa, and New Zealand.

Shelly Ann Hinds is one of two women in the group of seven – she has been practicing her art for a while, and is known through the Caribbean as we learn from the May 7th 2006 edition of the Guyana Chronicle

Barbados came with eleven shooters, four of them women, entering six persons in the X (professional) class and five in the O (junior) class.

Female shooters Jennifer Jordan and Sheron Marshall are X-class shooters, and Shelly-Ann Hinds and Aziza Garraway O-class.

Captain Richard Arthur, a politician and brother of Prime Minister Owen Arthur, said Barbados had not won the title in 29 years and for the first time they have a contingent serious on winning.

In case you wondered what became of that contest?

The best female performance was ninth, attained by Jennifer Jordan-Cousins of Barbados who registered 368 points and 27 Vs.

O-Class (junior) top honours went to Robert Griffith of Barbados with 363 points and 19 Vs, compatriot Shelly Hinds was second with 352 points and 17 Vs and Ivor Gomes of Antigua & Barbuda third with 350 and 14 Vs.

Here now is the latest comentary from the Team Captain –

Shelly, seen here taking some much need advice from a seasoned shooter. She scored her first possible 35/35 [Saturday] at 300m. Well-done girl.

Other outstanding scores were, team Capt who only dropped 5 for the day. 34/1, 33/1, 49/3 &34/2

Well the others are doing well. With wind at 5 to 10 right then 2 left, the score are very good.
