New South Coast Restaurant making bid to topple stranglehold of Barbadian bar & restaurants

I have been using to great effect now for tips and releases (my original for this account is a bit close to full due to digital photos), and some of the stuff you have seen – Police notices, news from St Kitts and Grenada, what happens at the Errol Barrow Centre, etc. all originated from that particular cyber-address!

I have known the Carib Beach Bar in four incarnations, so to speak, the first was run by Rusty Edghill, then Tracy Johnson, after that for a long time it was held by Anna Adameira… She ran a very tight ship, she was tough yet fair with the staff as she expected to do the best for her customers, and they always came back! Then Martin Rafael took over and under his aegis, I have watched many staff turn over and many regulars become irregular (me too)!

Well, in relation to this, I have been doing some snooping based on e-mails received, and rumours whispered to me by numerous sources about various watering holes along Barbados’ southern coastline. At the Carib Beach Bar in Worthing there have been quite a few resignations – some say they want to try and do their own thing, others are planning to reunite with a former boss at a new establishment…

The new establishment and a former boss whisper has popped up in different issues – but no, it ain’t Friday’s nor the Woodpecker Pub (BTW: Chefette don’t want Friday’s nor Subway’s yet kicks out the GAIA food vendors, what arrogance! Stop choking Barbados, instead – expand over to Grenada or St Lucia like what Owen said back in December ’99 at the opening of Chefette Speightstown) – it seems that Player’s Pub in Worthing may also have an ingredient to add in the mix…

It’s also known as Fat Boys (This consists of Allan Tayloraka Mighty Whitey, and Benny – a UK expat – were the verbal partners for the Slots/Eatery… It is alleged that a relative of the owner of an already popular fast food outlet is the real funder/brains of Players), but recently a loud suggestion has been making the rounds over not just how the food standard has dropped but it seems one of the two has grumbled over dining quality especially since the other is a chef they’re yet to prove it – moreso, they are considering to join forces with an erstwhile Manager of the Carib

Where is this place? It seems to be true, it’s set to be on the ground floor of what used to be the Caribbee hotel (Now there are some who allege the building is condemned and how can you create a new bar&restaurant?) – now that is connected to the Chefette relative too, isn’t it? The opening date is the 28th and will be run by Anna Adameira – ex-Carib owner/mgr!

It is a huge place, with a similar shape of bar like Carib‘s (which is done in the shape of Barbados) but is larger and there is beautiful artwork involving green monkeys that does not seem derogatory like other places… So we shall have to keep track! Any other tips, details or stories? Send it to

  1. Good luck to them. Its a shame about Players. Used to love the Tuesday night pub quiz.

Anyway, there are too may restaurants and bars in Barbados, so it is difficult to differentiate one place from the next. There is also no beach at the Caribbee, it is not near any hotels and parking could be a problem.

But they do have a nice space in which they could do something wonderful. But you have to think how smart is it to invest in a place that could be knocked down in a few years and coverted to condos.

See you there on the 28th, Ian.
