Earthrace fails bid to circumnavigate the planet – Once biodiesel vessel to decide if to go on

They tried and they tried – but Earthrace seems destined to get no satisfaction this year! They have been forced to buy REGULAR diesel –

The boat’s crew has already had to compromise their main mission – to show a boat can go around the world on biofuel ? because they had to fill up with conventional diesel when they could not afford to ship biodiesel to Palau.

They have suffered a myriad of misfortunes… whether a shredding propellor, colliding with illegal fishermen who were without running lights in Guatemala, or an old fishing net near Hawaii and now a blown piston has them wondering if to continue to Barbados or make a bolt for USA’s West Coast

Earthrace started from Barbados on March 10, but has lost over a month in running time through a series of mechanical problems as well as running down a skiff off the Guatemalan coast and killing a fisherman.

The latest problems at Palau, a melted piston nearly 6500km north of New Zealand, left the crew feeling they were caught in a “groundhog day” ? each day getting up optimistic they would be able to repair the damage, only to have their hopes dashed.

A website tracking the record bid,, has reported that if Earthrace can extend the next half of the world trip past Barbados, it could still break the world record by continuing on to San Diego.

Earthrace Captain Pete Bethune will soon make an announcement as to what the next move for the trimaran will be… Better to have sailed and failed rather than ponder yet never even learned from making a blunder; it is in the doing and not the done where all is said and won!
