International Soca Monarch has Bajan & Japanese competitors

Dale Carnegie once said that the sweetest sound a person can hear is their own name, so Barry Chandler must be ticked off that the Trinidad Newsday got his name wrong!

From the Caribbean, Cupid and Ninja Dan from St Lucia, Barbadian Barry Callender and Baby Killer from Grenada have also lined up for the Soca Monarch title.”

So Barry of “Flames” fame now gets a name change and is competing against a baby killer – is that an abortionist, a being (not person, implies humanity) who murders infants or a toddler who is now serial psychotic?

Anyhow, the less attention on that the better, what I found interesting is that Barry has to go toe-to-toe against what seems to be a hot contender from the Land of the Rising Sun…

MINMI, a 29-year-old Osaka-born Japanese hip-hop, reggae and soca singer, is among the 107 entrants for [Trinidad’s] Groovy Soca Monarch competition, and also one of the 110 artistes registered for the International Soca Monarch competition.

The young lady has a fair following on YouTube…

She started her career back in 1996 at clubs in Osaka performing both hip hop and reggae. She then released her first album in August 2003 and has since released four albums and eight singles. She has a big following in Japan as well as in Jamaica and here in Trinidad & Tobago.

Well, nevertheless, we wish the Bajan posse all the best – so no need for Barry to go up in flames, we wish him well, we are sure Neil Bernard will work his magic with Jabae again…
