NUPW Threat

The Congress of Trade Unions and Staff Associations of Barbados (CTUSAB) denounces and deplores the recent threat made on the life of officials of the National Union of Public Workers (NUPW), by an unknown person(s), who placed a substance in an envelope which was received at the Union’s Headquarters at Dalkieth Road, St. Michael.

Coming on the heels of the industrial action taken by the Union in its dispute with the Barbados Investment Development Corporation (BIDC) over the retirement of thirteen employees at that institution, the Congress considers the attempt to intimidate and threaten union officials, as a flagrant attempt to stifle the leadership of the trade union movement.

CTUSAB condemns this cowardly and criminal act, which it views was intended to terrorize and derail the labour movement from exercising its democratic freedoms as provided under the constitution of Barbados.

CTUSAB believes that such an act should be deplored in all quarters of the Barbadian society, and impresses upon national leaders, heads of organizations and institutions, to decry any similar acts that can sully the good reputation Barbados enjoys, as a peaceful and orderly society.
