Sagicor Life Inc. is throwing its support behind scores of visionary young people from across the region, coming together in Barbados this August for AnimeKon, the Caribbean’s premier pop culture convention.
For the first time at AnimeKon, the Sagicor Visionaries Challenge will feature as a main attraction, and is being seen as a natural fit for the five-year-old AnimeKon event which takes place on Saturday, August 23rd and Sunday, August 24th at The Lloyd Erskine Sandiford Centre, Two Mile Hill.
AnimeKon’s theme for 2014: “AnimeKon V: Rise of The Empire” signals the burgeoning ascent of the Caribbean’s pop culture community including – writers, artists, actors, filmmakers, designers, cosplayers, musicians, gamers, photographers, makeup artists, and more.
Tracey Knight-Lloyd, Assistant Vice-President Marketing, Sagicor Life Inc., said the Visionaries Challenge aimed to bring the best out of the region’s young people and dovetailed perfectly with AnimeKon’s thrust to develop a robust creative industry.
“At Sagicor Life Inc we are firmly committed to improving the lives of people in the communities where we operate, and we believe that our young people have major role to play in this. The Visionaries Challenge encourages them to find creative solutions to everyday problems, through artistic and innovative thinking. The Challenge promotes S.T.E.M. (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) as the foundation that enables these young people to bring their ideas into action, and AnimeKon provides an excellent environment to support this.”
Sagicor’s continuing contribution to Animekon was lauded by executive directors of the Convention, Omar Kennedy and Melissa Young.
“As principals of AnimeKon, Omar and I are delighted to welcome Sagicor’s Visionaries initiative to the English-speaking Caribbean’s premier pop culture convention. Like AnimeKon, Sagicor drives innovation and creativity, with vested interest in developing and nurturing these traits in our youth. We very much look forward to discovering the next Neil DeGrasse Tyson from the Caribbean’s creative collective,” said Young.
Students interested in entering the 2014 Sagicor Visionaries Challenge can visit the Facebook page at www.facebook.com/sagicorvisionaries for further details and instructions, and are encouraged to speak with their teachers for assistance in signing either as an individual or group entry.
The Sagicor Visionaries Challenge was conceptualised by Sagicor and the Caribbean Science Foundation (CSF), in partnership with the Caribbean Examinations Council (CXC) and aims to promote the use of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) to develop effective, innovative and sustainable solutions to problems.
This year winners will once again have the opportunity to take an all-expenses paid trip to Florida where they will tour related institutions and experience S.T.E.M. in action.
