The Hope Sanctuary now has additional support providing life-saving necessities to rescue cats under its care. Red Cat wine, a cocktail wine distributed by local company Stansfeld Scott & Co. Ltd, has become a sponsor of the local charity, assisting with providing clean water, daily food, medical care and safe shelter for cats currently living at the Sanctuary.

The partnership came as a result as an initiative, developed by Marita Greenidge, Brand Manager for Red Cat wine, to encourage local cat owners to show how much they loved their feline companions. Executed in conjunction with local wine and spirits retailer Wine World Inc., persons were asked to upload photos of themselves hugging their cats, to Facebook and Instagram with the captions “#hugyourcat2014” and “#redcatwine“.

“June 4 was International Hug Your Cat Day so it was felt to be a great opportunity to inspire local cat owners to show appreciation for their cats,” said Ms. Greenidge. “We also wanted to extend this appreciation to a local organisation helping cats on the island. Naturally, we thought of The Hope Sanctuary and the excellent work they continue to do. We decided to dedicate a portion of all Red Cat wine sales at Wine World retail outlets to support the organisation,” she added.

The Hope Sanctuary was founded 10 years ago by Cornelia Coulthrust. Cornelia wanted to do something to help distressed animals. She began adopting strays, some of which she kept at her home, the others she kept at a friend’s stables. After reaching a total of 55 rescued animals she decided to start a charity. Beyond taking care of distressed animals and helping them find new local homes, the Hope Sanctuary sends local animals overseas to find good homes. She applauded the Red Cat wine initiative noting that the spotlight often tended to be on dogs. “I think it is just lovely. Cats should be mentioned more often. Petting a cat is very therapeutic, just like sipping a nice glass of wine,” she stated.

Persons uploading pictures with their cats were asked to secure as many likes as possible to win a Cat Lover’s Basket valued at just over $400. The basket contained a scratching post, a litter box, cat food and bowls, bottles of Red Cat wine, a Wine World gift card and several other items. Winner Jalisa Seale secured over 120 votes. “I love Red Cat wine and I love cats so it was a natural combination. I am very excited; I can’t wait to unwrap and enjoy my prize!” she said.
