Variety Barbados seeks to appeal to Government’s Conscience as part of its 20th Anniversary: Global Summit draws hundreds for Barbadian Tourism coffers

Created in 1994 under the Patronage of Cheryl, Lady Forde – Variety Barbados continues to provide a crucial means of enabling differently abled Barbadian children to be able to exercise their minds at school, yet that service is now challenged as their specialised fleet with wheelchair equipment is reaching the end of the line in roadworthiness.

Chief Barker (President) Colin Brewer spoke at the swank Virgo Communications in Warrens, he was heralding how a global conference for the Variety Club’s parent franchise would be held here in Barbados with local heroes among those honored for their charity works…

The Chief Barker of the Barbados chapter was looking forward to the event since their counterparts from Japan, Israel, Australia and other climes would provide some urgent assistance in acquiring a new fleet to tote the Club’s charges across the country as they seek to learn in what most deem as “regular” classrooms {DESKTOP OR LAPTOP USERS, CLICK ON ICON FOR AUDIO – SMARTPHONE OR TABLET USERS, PLEASE CLICK ON Mr Brewer’s NAME}

While a benefactor and two motoring conglomerates have assisted, according to Chief Barker Brewer, there is still an urgent quest for at least 3 more vehicles {DESKTOP OR LAPTOP USERS, CLICK ON ICON FOR AUDIO – SMARTPHONE OR TABLET USERS, PLEASE CLICK ON Mr Brewer‘s NAME}

The world body, based on Mr Brewer‘s recommendation, situated President of the Senate Ms KerryAnn Ifill (also President of the Barbados Council for the Disabled) as a recipient of the Catherine Sheridan Award; the other recipient being posthumous for the late Dame Olga Lopes-Seale. In the Chief Barker‘s view, Dame Olga should be Barbados’ 11th National Hero {DESKTOP OR LAPTOP USERS, CLICK ON ICON FOR AUDIO – SMARTPHONE OR TABLET USERS, PLEASE CLICK ON Mr Brewer‘s NAME}

Officially starting on Thursday 22 May, the event concludes on Sunday evening at the Concorde Experience on 25th May where Barbadians (via a significant contribution) can hobnob with global delegates and get to tour the Concorde and become more familiar with Variety Club which started 1928. Both Mr Brewer and his Executive Director Donnah Russell assured the Media how Barbadians are in for a treat to learn the experiences of Blind Adventurer and Motivational Speaker Miles Hilton-Barber, who flew from London to Sydney to raise funds for eye surgery.

The award the President of the Senate is earning was named after the very baby who started the whole Variety movement almost 90 years ago. Catherine Sheridan was literaly found on a doorstep and the entertainment community raised money to look after the infant and Variety is still going strong, the Barbados edition is in fact Registered Charity No. 73

Originally from Zimbabwe, Mr Hilton-Barber will first speak at the Waves Restaurant & Spa on Thursday 22 May at 6:30 pm then the following morning he can be found at the Accra Beach hotel addressing Variety delegates from 8:30 am (both occasions allow Barbadians to participate for a reasonable contribution).

Senator Ifill was thrilled how the local chapter of the Variety Club considered her as a global nominee but was surprised as she sees her noble efforts merely as service everyone should undertake {DESKTOP OR LAPTOP USERS, CLICK ON ICON FOR AUDIO – SMARTPHONE OR TABLET USERS, PLEASE CLICK ON Sen. Mr Brewer is viewing the global session as an opportunity for Barbados to cement itself as part of a Charity Tourism destination – he revealed how Dr Jose Ettedgui who is a regular visitor to our shores is also a recipient but he may appear more often once this Freundel Stuart regime agrees to a special MOU with Variety {DESKTOP OR LAPTOP USERS, CLICK ON ICON FOR AUDIO – SMARTPHONE OR TABLET USERS, PLEASE CLICK ON Mr Brewer‘s NAME}

This event is drawing at least 100 delegates who will bring along family or friends which can push the final tally to 150 or more, more details can be found at varietybarbados.org or virgocomm.com
