ST. LUCIA GEARS FOR RUGBY: Team Bids For N. American, Caribbean Championships
ST. LUCIA’S senior male rugby team will compete in the group stage of the 2014 North America and Caribbean Rugby Association 15-a-side tournament scheduled to commence on May 10.
According to Colvis Samuels, President of the St.Lucia Rugby Football Union, St.Lucia is grouped with Curacao, BVI and St.Vincent and the Grenadines with matches scheduled for May 10 in Curacao against the host, Tortola in the BVI against BVI on June 8 and at home on June 21 against St. Vincent and the Grenadines.
He continued; “The winner of the group will play against Barbados for a spot in the second stage of the tournament on a home and away basis which also involves Guyana and Trinidad in the south. The winner of this stage will emerge as champions of the south and will play against the northern champs to crown the 2014 North America and Caribbean Rugby Champions (NACRA)“.
The SLRFU also indicated that St. Lucia will be depending on its speedy and elusive back consisting of Jerry Charles, Lenford Eugene, Gideon Antoine and others to baffle the opposition and score to win the match for St Lucia. However, this may be easier said than done since the opposing teams will expect this ploy and will seek to nullify this tactic by closing off the spaces and swarming the St. Lucia attacks.
