“Coming Election” as a Trade Unionist becomes Campaign Manager – DLP’s Unity Bar Lunchtime Lecture
There’s an old adage how Politics makes for strange bedfellows, in my view, it also thins people’s skins and luminaries previously highly individualistic are now more herd-minded than many popular ruminants at the prospect of securing ballots…
There was a recent meeting at George Street where Robert “Bobby” Morris delivered
propaganda a monologue on impending voting here in Barbados. Before an affable gent, this time he seemed to snap or ready to duel over any and every comment I made to him, e.g. when I remarked how a Microphone is a formality for him? He wanted to know what did I mean… Morris’ voice is deep and booming and therefore this was a compliment but he seemed ready to draw a figurative dueling glove…
The whole presentation was technically sound but structurally a fiasco – the intro to Mr Morris was 8 minutes, then Bobby’s own recollection why he’s qualified to be the DEM’s Campaign Manager was another 11:29 mins. with NO questions at the end of his altogether lengthy speech, really? His counter was he had to go to a funeral and would stop sharply at 2 pm, with the extended intros his delivery actually concluded at 2:15 and he did not leave ’til 2:30 and when I sought to get his attention he’d turn his back to me. The intros should have been drastically reduced, anyone who ever trained with Dale Carnegie can tell you an adequate lead-up to a guest can be done in 90 seconds or less? They also should have started the lecture a bit earlier if they insisted on dotting all p’s and crossing all i’s! It’s called PLANNING.
This is a man who claims he gave an honest critique of his Party’s performance in the last five years now heading for a dangerous 6th? Years ago, motivational speaker Les Brown while in Barbados said at the Wildey Gym how a true friend is one who lets you know your breath is bad or your pants are unzipped even if you’re in the middle of a crucial presentation – I recall this and shake my head at the irony… In 1994, the same Morris had such true courage when he spoke and voted against (then) P.M. Erskine Sandiford in a No Confidence motion which caused a 14 to 14 deadlock which paved the way for fresh voting despite securing a 1991 mandate, the DEM’s gave way to Owen Arthur for almost a decade an a half.
Such honesty was sadly missing where everything the Freundel Stuart regime has
bungled handled in the last 60 months got a passing grade – does being Campaign Manager pay so well? Morris acknowledged the recent video cartoons against the current Administration on Facebook but clearly states he instructed the DEM’s are not to engage in return volleys of equal vehemence – does this sound like a clever strategy? What happened to “Fight fire with fire…”? So I still pose the rest of my questions now, despite being denied due process, although if they’re answered this may explain recent heavy rains?
- There are claims how the budget of the recent Obama Vs Romney campaign was between 2 to 6 billion dollars, what is the DLP’s budget and will they have an open Prospectus for the public to review?
- This was alluded to earlier in the article, the same way Bobby stood against Sandi almost 20 years ago, would he advise Freundel even if it is not the data he wants to hear?
- As a former Trade Unionist, how does he truly assess the debacle between LIME & BWU when the Prime Minister had to intervene instead of allowing Dr Esther Byer-Suckoo? The only other person with a similar track history as Labour Minister was the BLP’s Rudolph ‘Cappy’ Greenidge who was far superior at Cricket commentary than defusing employment disputes.
The weird thing is, Morris came to the attention of the late Right Excellent Errol Walton Barrow when the young Morris was trying to tell older DEM’s why he felt they lost the 1976 elections when “Tom” Adams got in with a landslide. Morris’ analysis was considered brutal and stinging, yet Barrow said the older Party members need to listen if they’re to succeed… Somewhere along the way it appears Morris forgot his own advice, is it because now HE is an older Party member?
