BARBADOS GOES TO THE POLLS: Results of Non-Scientific Surveys at Bajan Reporter (LOL)!

While there are many who see Polls on News websites as unofficial and therefore to be ignored… Nevertheless it can give an indication where the pulse of a given community is leaning towards – good, bad or indifferent.

Recently Bajan Reporter carried a number of unofficial surveys on major and minor topics and while the polls are still open and can be selected with or without alcohol in your system (but no, this is NOT Florida, you can only vote ONCE) nevertheless as 2012 heads for the Calendar Graveyard, we thought it best to state results so far?

When Rihanna made a presentation to the QEH for equipment worth millions, we felt perhaps the Mayan Calendar was correct after all and the Twilight Of The Gods was indeed imminent… But we also took a look at Rihanna’s video for the BTA, was it for them or for her? Scenes from Barbados appeared sparse, yet the tune “Diamonds” from her latest album was rampant throughout the footage which seemed more concentrated on what Rihanna was doing – how often does she REALLY slam a dom’ with the fishermen of whether Consett’s Bay, Oistins or Six Men’s?

Not surprisingly, 80% felt the music video for the Tourism Authority was in fact an UNAPOLOGETIC effort to push her new disk!

Some Bajans naïvely feel to discuss interests of National focus one can remove Politics from the equation and still go forward, but for those who are aware that attempting to differentiate Politics and Nationalism is like trying to breathe without lungs, there were not one, but 2 related polls which sought to place a microscope on Barbados’ legislative future…

Firstly – when do you feel elections are truly coming? One deadline listed has passed; Boxing Day 2012! This was based on how Owen Arthur did just that in 2003, plus in 2007 he waited ’til late December but it was David Thompson who reaped the results of that decision come January 2008…

The electorate in this case have overwhelmingly agreed at 60.53% that Freundel is gonna hold out ’til Bussa comes down from his statue and  asks “Wha’s De Action, Nuh?” Yet 21.05% think a February summons can be likely and a paltry 15.79% still think action could be next month…

That is WHEN voting is likely to be called, this begs for HOW the choosing will be done! It creates an intriguing possibility, can the PEP become the next loyal Opposition of Her Majesty? Since there was a fairly strident 46.15% favouring the return of ‘king‘ Arthur of the BLP, yet there was only a lukewarm 15.38% remaining with the Eager 11 and Capt. Freundel…

But here’s the real kicker! The People’s Empowerment Party actually received 23.08% of selection – if they can just steer away from certain race strategies and embrace ALL Barbadians, then they may actually make a difference when voting (if?) happens! No one wants a situation like 1986 with the 3 Blind mice of Arthur, (Sir) Henry Forde & (Sir) David Simmons against the majority of a DLP Cabinet; nor is a 2003 “Dynamic Duo” of Crime & Violence Kellman and Thompson where they battled a 28 seat BLP regime (which could theoretically pass any law as they held over 2/3′s majority)!

If the PEP play their cards right, and even if the BLP landslides it, there could be a chance to effect true change for Barbados if the seats play 26 to 4 in David Comissiong and his motley crew’s favour…
