Santo Domingo pledges a new friendly police force on the way
The Minister of Interior and Police, Jose Ramon Fadul (Monchy) says that President Danilo Medina wants the new Police force to be less repressive and more community orientated and that the commission appointed to draw up plans to reform the Police needs to demonstrate how they will restore the order which Dominican society is demanding.
Fadul said that the new Police force would require strengthening in the areas of investigation and administration, better salaries and better equipment for the elite units.
On 22nd of November, Fadul gave President Medina the commission’s proposals for a major reform of the Police. They now need to be evaluated by the President before being sent to the National Congress for approval.
Fadul was speaking at the National Police Headquarters yesterday, Wednesday 28 November, and Police chief Jose Armando Polanco Gomez said that the Dominican people, and people all over the world did not want the police to be good investigators, but better at preventing crime. He went on to say what needed doing was to put more emphasis on lower ranking police agents who patrol the streets, so that they could prevent crime and arrest those responsible.
