Jamaican winger, Dane Richards, and Grenadian striker, Kithson Bain, were declared joint winners of the Digicel Golden Boot award by scoring three goals each during the Digicel Caribbean Cup finals 2010.
Richards, who also plays for Major League Soccer (MLS) side, the New York Red Bulls, scored three outstanding goals against Antigua & Barbuda; Grenada and Guyana. Former Tranmere Rovers player, Bain, scored against Jamaica, Martinique and Trinidad & Tobago.
The joint winners not only walk away with the Digicel Golden Boot title but were each presented with a brand new Samsung Galaxy tablet, which has been touted as “a serious competitor to the Apple iPad, boasting two cameras, Flash compatibility, and a more convenient size”.
Both Grenada and Jamaica made it into the final four however the former did not make it past the semi-finals. The Spice Boyz then lost 1-0 against Cuba to come fourth place and walk away with US$30,000. The Reggae Boyz claimed the Championship title for a second tournament running and took home the grand prize of US$120,000.
In addition to the Golden Boot awards, Digicel is also giving the “Digicel Player of the Tournament Award” to one player from the Digicel Caribbean Cup 2010.
In addition to online voting, votes will be taken from Digicel; the Caribbean Football Union (CFU) officials; Team coaches (who cannot submit a vote for a player on their own team); the four official match commissioners and finally, the Digicel Caribbean Cup TV commentators. The “Digicel Player of the Tournament Award” winner will be announced before Christmas and will be followed by a prize-giving presentation.
