Shrewsbury Methodist Church: Flowers and Jazz by candlelight
The secret is finally getting out. For the best jazz in Barbados in November go to the Shrewsbury Methodist Church in St. Philip for its show Flowers and Jazz. This will be the fifth annual show and this year the featured artistes are Janelle Headley, Jason Morris and the Barbados Community College Big Band. Past featured artistes have included Paula Hinds, Kellie Cadogan, Paul Thorne, Shane Forrester, Andre Woodvine and the band C4.Jason Morris is a young saxophonist who has just completed the summer course at the prestigious Berklee College of Music. This emerging talent is a member of the Hawthorne Methodist Church and represents a growing crop of jazz musicians who are Methodist. His style is very contemporary, somewhat similar to Elan Trotman and one wonders if it could be a result of their experiences at their alma mater, the Queen’s College School. He recently appeared in Kellie Cadogan’s sunset concert at the Frank Collymore Hall. Those who attended would recognise that they are in for a treat on November 1st.
The BCC Big Band is the only regularly functioning group of this nature in the island. Its repertoire includes Glen Miller favourites as well as more contemporary arrangements. This ensemble comprises students from the Associate Degree in Music programme and is actually a class where students are taught to perform in a variety of styles in this setting. Andre Woodvine tutors this group. These ensembles are one of the strengths of the Associate Degree in Music programme as students are able to gain a wide range of playing experiences.
This fifth show is going to be even more special as the team of floral decorators at the church will be enhancing their work by using candle light. The beautiful sanctuary will be spectacular and should not be missed. These arrangements will be on sale after the event. Tickets are currently available from members of the church for only $20. They can also be purchased at the door on the night of the show. For the best jazz in Barbados in November come to the Shrewsbury Church’s Flowers and Jazz by candle light.

I really enjoyed reading this article. I grew up in Barbados,St Philip. I reside in the UK at present. I attended the Shrewsbury Methodist Church as a child with my beloved grandmother now deceased. I have very fond memories of Shrewsbury Church and the other Methodist Churches. I am very pleased indeed that Shewsbury Methodist Church is the host to such an event.
Keep up the good work.
